What is Gynaecomastia?

Gynecomastia is a condition diagnosed as chest enlargement in males. It is characterized by swelling of the chest with glandular tissue, accumulation of unessential fat, and chest skin in males affecting one or both sides of the chest.

Gynaecomastia is a benign enlargement of male breast tissue(giving more feminine appearance). Gynaecomastia is a common condition in males. All men and women have breast glands, but they are not noticeable in men, because they tend to be small and undeveloped.

Gynaecomastia commonly occurs during puberty and can either be dormant or can increase with age and with weight gain. Many people who are suffering with gynaecomastia tell me that they are embarrassed to remove their shirts in front of others and avoid going outside for swimming etc, because they are uncomfortable to remove their shirts.

Overview

Gynaecomastia is an increase in the amount of breast gland tissue in boys or men, caused by an imbalance of the hormones estrogen and testosterone. Gynaecomastia can affect one or both breasts, sometimes unevenly.

Newborns, boys going through puberty and older men may develop gynaecomastia as a result of normal changes in hormone levels, though other causes also exist. Men and boys with gynaecomastia sometimes have pain in their breasts and may feel embarrassed.

Different Types of Gynecomastia

There are different types of gynaecomastia, it may be one or two-sided, true or pseudogynecomastia, and the swelling can range in size or grade. Gynaecomastia usually affects both sides, but one-sided or unilateral gynaecomastia can also occur. It is common for one side to start growing before the other, and for one side to be slightly larger than the other.Gynaecomastia is classified into four groups according to the severity of the breast tissue enlargement. The four grades are as follows:

Symptoms of gynaecomastia

Your first symptom of gynaecomastia may be a lump of tissue (swelling) under the nipple. Sometimes this lump is tender or sore. Symptoms vary from a small amount of extra tissue around the nipples to more prominent breasts. It can affect one or both breasts. Sometimes, the breast tissue can be tender or painful.

What causes gynaecomastia?

The most common cause of gynaecomastia is Idiopathic. Numerous other causes like medicine usage etc are present which are best explained by your doctor.

Procedure

Surgery is the only way persistent gynaecomastia can be treated effectively. There are no drugs and exercises that can affect the reduction of persistent gynaecomastia. The procedure called ‘Male Chest Reduction Surgery’ involves undergoing a surgical procedure that utilizes the procedure of liposuction and removal of excess glands to get a ‘flat chest’ appearance. Liposuction is performed through small keyholes and excess gland tissue left after liposuction is removed by the small incision that is well concealed in the areola. Occasionally with Grade I gynaecomastia, only liposuction may be sufficient and an areolar incision may not be needed. The most common procedure performed at our center for Gynaecomastia is Liposuction and Glandular excision. At our center, we use MICROAIRE-PAL (Power Assisted liposuction) which is the world leader in power-assisted liposuction machine.

Recovery

  • Routine daily activities can be undertaken from day one.
  • Compression garment is required to be worn after the procedure for a period of four to six weeks to help the skin to re-drape over the chest wall.
  • Strenuous activities involving chest muscles need to be restricted for four to six weeks after the procedure.

You could try exercising to get rid of the loose chest because your weight might be responsible for this. Sometimes these man boobs are caused by hormonal imbalance. In that case, the only solution is Gynecomastia treatment.

There are two ways to reduce a man’s chest. One is by exercising and dieting every day, which will reduce chest fat in a couple of months. Another way is to get gynaecomastia treatment which removes your chest fat in a day.

Gynecomastia can be absolutely safe. But it should be done with an experienced cosmetic surgeon and at an esteemed clinic for a safe and advanced surgical treatment and to ensure that there are no scars after the surgery.
